Did you know that you pay twice for every drop of water you use? You pay for the water when it comes out of the faucet. If you're connected to a public sewer system, you pay a sewage charge when it goes down the drain (along with more of your money).

The average Bostonian uses 37 gallons of water per day, and this figure is higher in other parts of Massachusetts. Water conservation not only saves money on your water bill. In many cases, it will also lower your heating bills. So how can you conserve water?

Know your usage

The water meter will tell you how much water you are using. Check your water meter or your water bill regularly. If you notice your water usage going up dramatically, you may have a leak somewhere. If you can’t find your leak, call us for service!

Install water-saving devices

From low-flow or dual-flush toilets to faucet aerators, there are many devices you can use to cut down on your water use. Faucet aerators work by breaking the water flow up into smaller streams and can be added to any shower or sink. In addition to saving water, they will also cut down on your energy bills by reducing the amount of hot water you consume.

Tweak your habits

Taking shorter showers, only running full loads of dishes or laundry, turning off taps when you’re not using them, and keeping drinking water in the refrigerator so that you’re not running it until cold every time you pour a glass of water….making small changes to your habits can add up to big savings.

Turn off your water if you’re going away

If you’ll be out of town for an extended period of time, turn off your water using the main shut-off valve. This will protect you from wasted water AND a flood in case there is a leak or a pipe bursts.

Take a bath!

It’s hard to believe it, but a bath uses less water than all but the shortest showers. So the next time you need a break, run yourself a tub and relax. You’ll earn it back in water savings!
